Bringing My Loneliness to God

For quite some time, I have wrestled with a question I am almost too ashamed to ask:

If I know who God says I am through Christ—loved, valued, seen, accepted—why does loneliness still hurt so much? Why do I still wrestle with needing people? Why can I know these truths deeply, and yet still ache when no one reaches out? Why does being left out sting? Why does the silence of others feel heavier than it should?

I have always thought this was a faith problem. I am beginning to understand that it is not necessarily a faith problem. It is often a human one.

God created us for relationships. We were made not only to be loved by God, but also to experience His care through people. We need to be known, remembered, pursued, encouraged, comforted, and understood. These desires are not weaknesses. They are part of how we were designed.

Sometimes I have believed that if my faith were stronger, I would not feel the pain of relational lack. I have even thought that perhaps I wouldn’t need people at all. But that is not true.

God’s love establishes our worth, but human connection often helps that love become felt.

Here is what I am learning: for some of us, loneliness cuts deeper because it touches older wounds. If you grew up unseen, emotionally alone, carrying burdens too young, or learning that your needs came last, then adult loneliness may awaken more than present sadness. It may stir old grief that has never been healed.

When no one reaches out, now something deeper whispers: No one comes for me. No one notices. I am alone again.

That pain is real—but it is not the whole truth.

Sometimes what we call loneliness is actually a longing for two specific things:

To be pursued. To be understood.

Not just invited somewhere. Not just surrounded by people. But to have someone think of you first. To have someone ask how you really are. To be known beneath the surface and still wanted there.

That kind of longing is not you being too much. It may simply reveal the kind of love you needed as a child but did not receive.

And perhaps healing is not found in shaming yourself for needing people, but in bringing that ache honestly before God and allowing Him to heal that wound.

Maybe the answer is not pretending I no longer need people, or shaming myself for the ache when loneliness rises. Maybe it is bringing that need honestly before God, trusting that He understands both the wound and the longing.

I do not have all the answers for loneliness. I only know that God is not ashamed of my need, and He is not distant from my ache. Somehow, even in this season, He is teaching me that I can bring it all to Him. I am still learning this, but I believe He can meet me even here.

When we Feel Forgotten, Trust in Him

O LORD, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day?

How long will my enemy have the upper hand?

Turn and answer me, O LORD my God! Restore the light to my eyes, or I will die.

Don't let my enemies gloat, saying, "We have defeated him!" Don't let them rejoice at my downfall.

But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me. I will sing to the LORD because he has been so good to me. Psalm 13 (NLT)

I love these words of David. He, who God says is “a man after My own heart” understood what it meant to be deeply sad in his soul.

He felt forgotten. He felt that God no longer saw him. He thought he might die if God didn’t answer.

I get it. I’ve been there. I struggle often with a deep sadness of the soul. But, like David, I refuse to stay there.

The first thing David does is pray. He prays honestly, pouring out exactly how he feels  He asks God to defeat his enemy. Davide understands that depression, or a deep sadness of the soul, is an enemy that must be battled. We must pray to God for help in battling this enemy.

Then he reminds himself of the truth. He chooses to rejoice because God will rescue him. He can still sing in the sadness because God has been good. God is good!

David relies on the truth he already has learned about God. God can be trusted to rescue him even if in the moment he feels forgotten.

David has learned that no matter what life may look like today God can be trusted to show His unfailing love and goodness in the midst of it all.

David relies on truth not emotions. Sometimes that is hard because emotions seem real, but we must take our feelings to God and allow Him to speak truth into them.  May he be our example in those moments we might feel forgotten and alone.

Thank you, God, for this reminder today. I can trust in Your goodness and unfailing love. Help me to focus on Your truth when the lies of the enemy come. Amen

Grace in the Wilderness

wildernessgraceWhen I was young the wilderness seemed wild and untamed.

It brought times of isolation and pain.

My soul would groan, ache and whine at the dry, cracked unbearable surroundings.

It seemed like punishment. Torture. Abandonment.

Now that I am older, more intimate with the wilderness I embrace it.

Now, even though it still brings isolation, I see God.

I see grace in the wilderness as it brings growth, renewal and humility.

It brings a deeper, closer more intimate walk with God.

"You shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. Deuteronomy 8:2-16

Dear Sisters, Let Us Love

“This is my command: Love each other.” John 15:17 “Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love.” Eph 4:2 NLT

445763I don’t know why you have been surprised by the harshness of life, no one said it would be easy. People will be mean, they will ignore you, say hurtful things about you. There will be those who seem to not care, they go about their life in seemingly selfish behavior. They will judge you unjustly on outward appearances and things they don’t see or understand. You will experience times of loneliness and pain. You will face death, sickness and heartbreak.

No one lives long without these things. No. One. “Dear friends, don't be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 1 Peter 4:12 NLT

Dear sister, you must also recognize those moments that you have caused the hurt in the life of another. You have judged unjustly and caused heartache. You have ignored one who needed a friendly smile. You too have said hurtful things. You have been selfish. You have made the choice to not befriend one who needed it. You have chosen to try to withdraw and hide from life. You have decided to hold people at arms length.

Yes today is a day of sorrowful reflection. A day that reminds me I have failed my sisters. I have hurt and been hurt. I have been judged and I have judged. The thing is, we all have failed one another. We have failed as yet another wife, mother and sister falls into depression, and despair. She is ready to give up on her community, herself and life. She feels alone.

We are all guilty. Not one of us can claim that we have not been selfish. We have ignored those in need of a friend. We all do or say things that cause heartbreak. We are all guilty of not being the hands and feet of Jesus to all within our community regardless of race, social, marital, or economical status.

It is time for confession. Time for forgiveness. It is time to stop hurting and start reconciling. Let us embrace one another with the love of Jesus Christ. Let us reach out to a sister who needs to know someone cares. If we can’t be the hands and feet of Jesus to those within our church walls how will we ever reach those outside the walls?

“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor” Romans 12:10

“Let us not become conceited, or irritate one another, or be jealous of one another.” Gal 5:26NLT

Oh Father help me to see the hurt and pain of those around me. Help me to be Your hands and feet. Help me to see with Your eyes and hear with Your heart. Forgive me for my pity excuses to not reach out and serve those who need a simple hug or smile. I want Your Spirit to be alive in me working, and doing the will of the Father. Help me to reach across racial and social division to those who need a friend. Help me to get out of my comfort zone and reach out to those who are different then me. Help me be like Jesus. Amen.

His Word, Refreshing to My Soul

The Word of GodThe sun is shining, it’s gorgeous outside! Yet within, my soul is sad. I awoke this morning in a place of physical pain and feeling tired. My emotions were all over the place. Feeling alone, forgotten and unwanted.

Feelings. We can’t always trust them. We can’t always live them out as if they were true. So often they lie to us.

The reality is I am tired, actually it’s more like exhausted. I haven’t been to the doctor but all the sign are there, I am iron deficient. I’ve been here before, many times, so give me a few days of iron pills and raw green smoothies and it will be better. But being this tired doesn’t help with the emotional feelings. Yet, it does help in knowing I need to fight all that much hard to believe and focus on what I know is true.

You see, when we are physically exhausted, and/or in pain, it effects our ability to fight the spiritual and emotional. Coming to the place of recognizing that is huge. I haven’t always understood the importance of what is going on in the physical body and how it effects the other…but that would take another blog post.

How do I fight though when everything in me wants to unplug my phone, stay away from people and to go to bed? God is my only hope. He is the only one I can believe and trust. Today He spoke the words of Psalms 34 to me. The words are beautiful, refreshing to my soul.

I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul will make its boast in the LORD; The humble will hear it and rejoice.  O magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together.

I will bless You! Regardless of how I feel or what is going on in my life I will boast in You. I will praise Your name!

I sought the LORD, and He answered me, And delivered me from all my fears. They looked to Him and were radiant, And their faces will never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him And saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, And rescues them.

Thank you for answering my hearts cry. You will deliver me from my fears, You will save me from myself and the lies that my emotions speak.

O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!  O fear the LORD, you His saints; For to those who fear Him there is no want. The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; But they who seek the LORD shall not be in want of any good thing.

Oh YES! You are good, You are the one I can take refuge in! I will seek You in this place of exhaustion and focus on Your goodness to me!

Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.  Who is the man who desires life And loves length of days that he may see good?  Keep your tongue from evil And your lips from speaking deceit.  Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it.

Teach me Lord. Teach me to see Your goodness in all of life. Help me to see as You see. Teach me to discern between evil and good so that I might choose to do good.

The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous And His ears are open to their cry.The face of the LORD is against evildoers, To cut off the memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and the LORD hears And delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to the broken hearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Oh Lord, I know You see me. I know You hear me. Thank you for Your faithfulness in drawing near to me on days like today. Thank you that You do not abandon me when I am down. I am so grateful for Your presence in my life!

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones, Not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked, And those who hate the righteous will be condemned. The LORD redeems the soul of His servants, And none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.

Lord I am reminded that all over the world Your children are facing life and death trials. They are being beaten, broken and killed for Your name’s sake. No matter what happens here on this earth to our bodies, no matter how bad it gets, or how bad we might feel, You will deliver us. You HAVE delivered us! You have redeems us and no matter what happens to our bodies our souls can take refuge in You.

We can have joy everlasting in all circumstances knowing that our soul has been redeemed and one day soon we will be with You forever. Amen.
